Question- Which Horse Training Online Videos Would You Like to See?

I hope you’re having a great summer. Summer seems to have finally arrived here in the northwest. It’s nice to spend more time outdoors with our horses.

By this time you should have gotten two emails at least from me and have seen two Free Videos from Mark Shaffer. I got some feedback that one of the videos was hard to hear. I’m sorry about that. Live video feeds can sometimes be that way. I’ll try to make sure the future videos are a bit louder.

I also got some feedback from one person that they could not see the videos at all. If you have any issue then be sure to download the current version of Adobe Flash and that should take care of the problem.

Now I have a question for you. I am busy working with Professional Horse Trainers to bring you more online video horse training in workshop format. I’d like to provide what you want so please let me know which type of training you would most like to see from the following list.

Western Pleasure

Western Riding

Horsemanship

Showmanship

Lunge Line

Trail

Hunter Under Saddle

Please just send me an email at railandpatternhorse@gmail.com and tell me your top 2 or 3 types of online horse training you’d like to see.

Or you can go to my blog post and give me some feedback as well. This is the link to my blog post : HorseTrain

New Technology now makes it possible to Learn How to Train Your Horse and Improve Your Horsemanship Skills from the comfort of your own home.

Now you can watch an online video with How to Instructions as often as you need to until you understand the concepts and actually turn information into knowledge.

Then as you practice the exercises that you’ve watched over and over again in the Video, with your horse your body and your horses body will turn the information into what is called muscle memory. Just like when you drive a car…your foot automatically knows when to put the brake on….

You will begin to learn how to ride your horse using this same muscle memory. Now you will learn an exercise and then be able to move on to the next exercise much more quickly because you are really getting it….rather than just having more information.

Pros and Cons of Your Horse in Full Time Horse Training with a Professional Horse Trainer

In my previous post I listed three methods of  horse training and improving your horsemanship skills.

The 3 methods to Get Your Horse Trained:

  1. Send them to a Professional Horse Trainer for Full Time Training
  2. Train Your Own Horse
  3. Combination Method >>>Work with a Professional Horse Trainer on a Part Time Basis and Train Your Own Horse on a Part Time Basis

Today I want to cover the Pros and Cons of Method One; Your  Horse in Full Time with a Professional Horse Trainer:

Here’s what it looks like when your horse is with a professional trainer:

    • Your horse trainer rides your horse a set number of days per week
    • You set an appointment to see, ride, and watch the trainer ride
    • The trainer coaches you how to ride your horse
    • The trainer tell you which events to ride your horse in
    • The trainer tells you when your horse is ready for you to ride
    • The trainer tells you when your horse is ready to show
    • The trainer tells you if the horse is suitable for you

Your Horse in Training: Things to Like or Pros>>>

    1. Trainer coaches you on how to ride
    2. Trainer fixes your horse’s problems
    3. Trainer gets your horse ready for you to ride
    4. Gives you a safe environment to ride and learn in
    5. Provides a social environment
    6. Trainer helps you make decisions
    7. Trainer can bring you along at your speed
    8. Trainer does most of the work for you

Your Horse in Training: Cons

  • Full-time board and training is expensive
  • Trainer trains the way they want the horse to go
  • Trainer bonds with your horse
  • You don’t get the feeling of achievement and satisfaction
  • No matter how well trained your horse is, when you get your horse home:
  • You must still learn how to ride your horse yourself; each horse is different with different personalities and different needs.
  • Many horse trainers have their specific program
  • Trainers don’t change their program to fit the horse
  • Trainers change the horse to fit into their program
  • You lose control of your horse
  • The horse trainer makes the decisions
  • You can’t see your horse on your timetable
  • You can’t learn how to ride once a week
  • There is no substitute for time in the saddle
  • The only way to achieve harmony and connection with your horse- spend time with him on and off his back – no one can do that for you!
  • Things to consider when making your decision:

      • Your short term and long term goals
      • Olympic competitors have a trainer/coach
      • World show competitors have a trainer/coach
      • Your budget
      • Your ability to let go of control to the trainer
      • There is no right or wrong – its just what fits for you
      • You can always change to another method

Train Your Horse 3 Methods to Horsetraining [Video]

    Get Your Horse Trained…3 Methods

With over 25 years in the Horse Industry I’ve seen 3 main methods used to get your horse trained.

Buying an already trained horse is not on this list. Let me explain why: First of all no horse is ever 100% trained. They need continual training and reminding of how to perform just like you and I need continual practice and exercise in anything in which we want to excel.

Second: I’ve purchased many horses that are supposedly trained only to get them home and find out they didn’t know nearly what I thought they should. Therefore they needed to be trained to my way of wanting a horse trained.

Not to say that you shouldn’t buy a trained horse, just remember that a trained horse is a subjective term. And even with the best of training, every horse needs continual training and work to stay in tune.

I’ll cover each of these Methods in more detail in upcoming posts. Until then>>>

Horse lovers take a look at the Worlds Smallest Horse

Horse lovers take a look. No matter how old you get you can still enjoy having horses. While I love my big 16.3 H gelding it would be quite fun to have a small horse. I guess as a horse lover you can always down size and still get your horse fix. I could fit 30 small horses in my barn. I bet my husband would just love that!

Take a look at this fun video…

Einstein. The smallest Horse In The World. Born April 22, 2010 in Barnstead New Hampshire at Tiz A Miniature Horse Farm. Owned by Charles Cantrell and Rachel Wagner.

Einstein weighs 6 Lbs and is 14 inches tall. Music in video called Raspberry Blues by David MacVittie and Anna Schaad. www.AnnaSchaad.com.

Teach Your Horse To Side Pass

    April 27, 2010 by Jean

The Side Pass is a Great Horse Training Exercise

Teaching your horse to side pass is an exercise that has many benefits that most of us never think about. Mark Shaffer says “the side pass is the lope” he explains that what ever issues you’re having at the side pass are the same issues you’ll have with your horse at the lope. I don’t know about you but I never thought about the side pass in that way before.

Mark’s clear way of giving instructions helped me to learn how to side pass my horses the “right” way, for the first time. In the past I’ve taught my horses to side pass but I was really never getting their body in this “right” way to achieve real results. After learning from Mark Shaffer how to correctly teach my horse to side pass I was amazed at what a difference doing it “right” made in my horses movement and all his gaits.

I’m offering a Free Video of  a live clinic with Mark Shaffer teaching the side pass on this site and here. Do yourself a favor and check it out. The Side Pass is one of those exercises that every horse needs to know how to do.

I found this article with pictures on teaching your horse to side pass from Clinton Anderson and thought I’d share it with you as well. Regardless of the discipline you ride the Side Pass is something the horse needs to know.

Clinton says ” The lateral movement of side-passing helps to free up your horse’s ribcage, shoulders, and hindquarters. It teaches him to move his feet in a rhythmic, even way, without using his hindquarters for forward impulsion. It helps him learn to keep his shoulders, ribcage, and hindquarters aligned. Teaching your horse to side pass will help you make the most of his natural athletic ability.

In addition, using your legs to direct your horse’s ribcage in a side pass helps you upgrade to “power steering.”It makes your horse more easily maneuverable on the trail, around cattle, in traffic, or when negotiating tight turns–including those needed when going through a gate.”

You can find the whole article from Clinton Anderson here .

    Enjoy!

The World Equestrian Games in Kentucky

    March 31, 2010 by Jean

Just in case you haven’t heard…the World Equestrian Games are coming to the USA in Sept 2010.  Here is a Calendar of activities from their website as well as a history of the games. These sound like something you don’t want to miss if at all possible.

world equestrion 300x180 The World Equestrian Games in Kentucky

The following is quoted from their site and gives you the history of the games.

    “History of the Games

    Before the World Equestrian Games

The concept  of a World Equestrian Games, at which all the FEI disciplines would decide their World Championships at one time and place, was first proposed to the FEI in 1983. Until that time, the World Championships for each discipline was then accorded the privilege of hosting the next World Championship in that discipline four years later. historyTable%283%29 The World Equestrian Games in Kentucky

For example, the Kentucky Horse Park was selected by the United States Federation to host the Eventing World Championship in 1978 after Bruce Davidson won the 1974 title at Burghley and thus earned for the USA, the right to host the Eventing championship.

    Previous Host Countries

The very first World Equestrian Games were held in Stockholm in 1990. Six disciplines were involved–Jumping, Dressage, Eventing, Driving, Endurance and Vaulting. In 1994 the city of The Hague in the Netherlands hosted the Games.

After a late cancellation of the Games that were to be held in Dublin, Ireland, Rome stepped forward to host the 1998 Games on one year’s notice. All disciplines except the Endurance were held and beautifully executed considering the very short preparation time. The Endurance was held in Dubai that year.

The next Games were held in Jerez de Frontera, Spain in 2002 and included all six disciplines and Reining for the first time.  Following that the Games went to Aachen 2006, again with seven disciplines, and were a fabulous success.

In 2010 the games leave Europe for the first time and come to the United States to the Kentucky Horse Park where, for the first time, Para Dressage, the newest FEI Discipline will be competed together with the other seven.”

    Could be Fun!!

The only thing I don’t get is why none of the Western Events like Pleasure, Western Riding etc are not a part of something like this. Any ideas folks?

Oh and last but not least find their website with all the info here

Horse Training at its Best [Video]

    March 25, 2010 by Jean

This video inspires me to want to work with my horses more. Showing your horse in a performance event should be a reward for your many hours of work with that horse. You can see in this video that Clinton Anderson has spent many hours with this horse. And even though he competes in the reining horse events those of us who compete in the pleasure horse events can learn a lot from him.

My advice; never close your mind to a particular kind of training just because that trainer doesn’t compete in the same events that you do. A good horseman is a good horseman.

I hope you enjoy this video.

Women in Particular Need this -Today’s Motivational Quote

“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. ” Eleanor Roosevelt

Women seem to have a hard time with allowing men to take advantage of them. No this is not man bashing, its just a statement of fact. I’ve seen it way too many times.

But it happens with men and women so beware.

It for sure happens in many relationships with horse trainers. Horse lovers trust yourself first and the trainer next.

Men and women trust yourself, your gut feelings first before you take on what someone else has to say.

Train Your Horse with World Champion Mark Shaffer

MarkShaffer1 e1268263004960 Train Your Horse with World Champion Mark Shaffer I had the pleasure of attending a two day Mechanics in Motion Clinic with World Champion horse trainer Mark Shaffer this past weekend.

It was one of the best horse clinics I have ever attended. He not only knows how to train a horse but he knows how to communicate with the individual horse owner to help us learn how to train our horse.

His methods are great and they work. I have a horse who has too much head bounce at the lope and in 15 minutes time he showed me the technique to fix it. Or I should say he showed me how to work my horses body so that my horse fixed the problem herself.  This trainer knows what he is doing.

Which with over 100 world championships I guess you would expect him to. His methods are safe and effective without being hard on your horse.

I’m very excited to tell you that coming soon Rail and Pattern Horse will be sponsoring an online Horse Training Clinic with Mark Shaffer. Be sure to sign up on our mailing list to ensure you are notified of this online training. One of the first that I am aware of it is sure to be sell out.
