Train Your Horse with World Champion Mark Shaffer

MarkShaffer1 e1268263004960 Train Your Horse with World Champion Mark Shaffer I had the pleasure of attending a two day Mechanics in Motion Clinic with World Champion horse trainer Mark Shaffer this past weekend.

It was one of the best horse clinics I have ever attended. He not only knows how to train a horse but he knows how to communicate with the individual horse owner to help us learn how to train our horse.

His methods are great and they work. I have a horse who has too much head bounce at the lope and in 15 minutes time he showed me the technique to fix it. Or I should say he showed me how to work my horses body so that my horse fixed the problem herself.  This trainer knows what he is doing.

Which with over 100 world championships I guess you would expect him to. His methods are safe and effective without being hard on your horse.

I’m very excited to tell you that coming soon Rail and Pattern Horse will be sponsoring an online Horse Training Clinic with Mark Shaffer. Be sure to sign up on our mailing list to ensure you are notified of this online training. One of the first that I am aware of it is sure to be sell out.

Take Off Your Spurs to Deepen Your Seat

July 31, 2009 by Jean

When you use spurs every time you ride you begin to depend on the spur to cue your horse. Which while this is not a bad thing it can become a crutch instead of an aid. As they are meant to be.

I’ve found that by taking off my spurs ever so often, I strengthen my legs and my seat. This helps me to drive my horse up under and into the bit with my seat, thighs and calves rather than just sticking a spur in their side.

As my body gets stronger then I can use a softer cue to get my horse to do what I want them to. They like this better and so do I.

As an amateur rider, my balance is not always what I’d like for it to be so with the spurs I find that on occasion I’m hitting the horses side with my spur when I don’t really intend to. This causes them to start and creates uneven movements, when I want smoothness in all the horses gaits.

I’m practicing by taking my spurs off about every 4th or 5th time I ride. I want to see what the difference will be for me and my horse.

I’ll keep you posted.

Working Your Horse on the Ground Helps Identify Problems

July 31, 2009 by Jean

I’ve found it helpful to work my horses from the ground so I can see what they are doing. When I see how they respond without me on their back then I know what to expect when I’m in the saddle.

If they are doing what I want them to, moving correctly without me on their backs but don’t when I’m in the saddle then I can be pretty sure the problem is mine and not theirs.

But if they don’t do it correctly without me in the saddle then I can be pretty sure it’s their problem and not mine.

This way I know which one or both of us I need to focus on fixing.

Manage Energy- Yours and Your Horses

June 15, 2009 by Jean

It’s important to separate your energy level from your horses and attend to each separately. Your horse is in a different environment and his energy level has changed from his normal at home energy. But it’s a mistake to assume all the excess energy you’re feeling is just your horse.

Before you show your horse in a performance class you’re going to most likely be a bit nervous yourself and have some excess energy that you need to work off.
