How to Train Your Horse and Improve Your Horsemanship Skills Goes to an Online Video Format…

New Technology now makes it possible to Learn How to Train Your Horse and Improve Your Horsemanship Skills from the comfort of your own home.

Now you can watch an online video with How to Instructions as often as you need to until you understand the concepts and actually turn information into knowledge.

Then as you practice the exercises that you’ve watched over and over again in the Video, with your horse your body and your horses body will turn the information into what is called muscle memory. Just like when you drive a car…your foot automatically knows when to put the brake on….

You will begin to learn how to ride your horse using this same muscle memory. Now you will learn an exercise and then be able to move on to the next exercise much more quickly because you are really getting it….rather than just having more information.

Information>>>Turns Into Knowledge>>>Knowledge Turns Into Muscle Memory>>>

The results…You Learn Horsemanship Skills – Faster – Better – Have More Fun – and You Will Quickly Move On To Learning More!

It was one of the best horse clinics I have ever attended. He not only knows how to train a horse but he knows how to communicate with the individual horse owner to help us learn how to train our horse.

His methods are great and they work. I have a horse who has too much head bounce at the lope and in 15 minutes time he showed me the technique to fix it. Or I should say he showed me how to work my horses body so that my horse fixed the problem herself. This trainer knows what he is doing.

Which with over 100 world championships I guess you would expect him to. His methods are safe and effective without being hard on your horse.

I’m very excited to tell you that coming soon Rail and Pattern Horse will be sponsoring an online Horse Training Clinic with Mark Shaffer. Be sure to sign up on our mailing list to ensure you are notified of this online training. One of the first that I am aware of it is sure to be sell out.

Take Your Spurs Off to Improve Your Body Cues With Your Horse

When you use spurs every time you ride you begin to depend on the spur to cue your horse. Which while this is not a bad thing it can become a crutch instead of an aid. As they are meant to be.

I’ve found that by taking off my spurs ever so often, I strengthen my legs and my seat. This helps me to drive my horse up under and into the bit with my seat, thighs and calves rather than just sticking a spur in their side.

As my body gets stronger then I can use a softer cue to get my horse to do what I want them to. They like this better and so do I.

As an amateur rider, my balance is not always what I’d like for it to be so with the spurs I find that on occasion I’m hitting the horses side with my spur when I don’t really intend to. This causes them to start and creates uneven movements, when I want smoothness in all the horses gaits.

I’m practicing by taking my spurs off about every 4th or 5th time I ride. I want to see what the difference will be for me and my horse.

I’ll keep you posted.

I’ve found it helpful to work my horses from the ground so I can see what they are doing. When I see how they respond without me on their back then I know what to expect when I’m in the saddle.

If they are doing what I want them to, moving correctly without me on their backs but don’t when I’m in the saddle then I can be pretty sure the problem is mine and not theirs.

But if they don’t do it correctly without me in the saddle then I can be pretty sure it’s their problem and not mine.

This way I know which one or both of us I need to focus on fixing.

After many years breeding Quarter Horses, I’m finally back to riding more than working with babies and yearlings. Now I’m focused on improving my horsemanship skills. This video of Steve Heckaman that I found on You Tube is a great learning video for you and me as amateurs who want to do some of our own work.

Pay close attention to the way he asks his horse to move his front end before he asks for the lope.

One of the best ways to learn is to watch a professional at work.

Horse Training Tips

Manage physical and emotional energy, yours and your horses at home and on performance competition day.

It’s important to separate your energy level from your horses and attend to each separately. Your horse is in a different environment and his energy level has changed from his normal at home energy. But it’s a mistake to assume all the excess energy you’re feeling is just your horse.

Before you show your horse in a performance class you’re going to most likely be a bit nervous yourself and have some excess energy that you need to work off.

Tips For You:

Teaching your body to relax begins long before show day. Your body and mind just like your horses will develop muscle and mind memory when you do something repeatedly.

Then it will kick in automatically when you need it. So begin to teach your mind and body at home to relax with what ever relaxation exercises work for you.

Some of my favorites:

Deep breaths in and cleansing breaths out. Breathe in deep through your nose allowing your chest to rise as you breath in air. Hold to the slow count of 5 then blow your breath out through your mouth feeling it leave your body all the way down through your stomach.

Listen to specific relaxing music. Use the same music all the time and allow your mind to memorize it. Then on show day you can listen in your head to this music. Your body will automatically begin to relax because you have taught it that when you hear this music to do just that.

On show day give yourself a few minutes to walk around the barns a few times and as you walk concentrate on your breathing exercises and listening to your music in your head.

Tips for Your Horse:

First of all know your horse. If your horse isn’t used to being ridden twice or three times a day at home then you may not want to ride him that many times at a show. Just like you have to build up your stamina level to compete you have to build up your horses as well.

Work with him at home to get him accustomed to whatever riding schedule he will have on show day otherwise you may find he gets tired and gives out on you before you even get into the show pen.

On the other hand, expect that he will have more energy at the show than he does at home because he is seeing many more sights, sounds and other horses.

Lunge him to relieve his excess energy in his body and also his mind.

When you first take him out to lunge, allow him to choose whether he wants to lope, jog or walk. But always maintain control and respect. If a horse doesn’t show you respect on the ground he surely isn’t going to when you are on his back.

Then once he has had a few minutes to come down on his own – note- this does not mean wildly running around in a circle. Next ask him to go around first one direction in all three gaits and then reverse him and have him go the other way. Keep this up for a few minutes. Its important to know your own horse to know how long you need to lunge him.

By now you should have his body somewhat relieved of his physical energy. But remember that energy is emotional as well as physical.

You need to release his emotional energy just as you do your own. So lunge him some more but this time have him go around one way for maybe half a circle and then ask him to reverse and go the other direction for half and circle and then repeat. Do this at all three gaits and for as long as it takes him to release his emotional energy and focus entirely on you.

Now relax and enjoy your class!
