Kat,
I am going to work with some Natural Horsemanship Trainers to get some How to Videos up on Lunging as well as then taking it to the next level and get a western pleasure trainer to show us how they teach a horse to lunge.

Personally I use both methods - ie natural horse training techniques and from a pleasure trainer. I will do a post on how I work with my horses and hopefully that will help you.

I am new to training and have two green, rescue horses I am working with. Both horses spook at everything including their shadows. I ride western and have interest in trail riding. Also having a problem with lunging, they like to turn their backside to me and kick. They will go one time around the pen and stop and face me. HELP!!!

John,
Thank you for your comment. It sounds like Bruce will be sorely missed.
In the earlier days of learning to ride I would never have thought that I needed to learn about a horse's muscle movement. But now years later I know that this information is indeed very helpful in achieving my horsemanship goals.

"Learning balance and better position in the saddle to work with (and not against) the horse was key."
Very well said and so true.

I knew Bruce for 8 years. He had a way of working with horses that was rare and based on the horse's natural behavior. He did the same for the riders as he trained me for the hunt field as well the horses I rode. Understanding the horse, the mechanics of its muscle movement and why it does what it does, helped me better anticipate the approaches to jumping as well as position on the flats. Learning balance and better position in the saddle to work with (and not against) the horse was key.

Great article Jean! Love what you have to say and how important it is to keep things positive for our own health and betterment of the horse industry. It is sad; however, we can live, learn, and move forward as that is the only way to stay true and alive in this horse industry. We live in a competitive society that sometimes gets out of hand and we need to stop and look at own own accountability in how we would want to be treated in the end. It is just like the work force out there. There have been companies where I could work years and years as well as retire in the end. For example, Boise Cascade Corporation had TQM....Total Quality Management that consisted of true team work, collaboration, and respect among all (AND I MEAN EACH AND EVERY EMPLOYEE) with warm kindness, unselfishness, friendly, accepting collegues. We all loved working there. There was also the true competitive edge of working for a cellular company which had massive employee turn over, fear of losing their jobs, and negative feelings that plagued those around. It was miserable and hard to avoid. You would be lucky to stay on the company for longer than a year there. Recognizing the unhealthy signs, I decided to move on to a life changing career in teaching and making a positive influence and difference in their lives.

With these life changing experiences, I believe we gravitate towards the positive things in life and those around us. I guess that is why some trainers are more successful than others....people skills is a huge part of providing excellent customer service and professionalism. It is like spreading apart the stallions from our geldings out there...there is a huge difference between the two. lol.

It is so true that you just need to hear things in a new way. One thing that helped me to sit deeper in the saddle was to keep your chin behind your belt buckle. Sometimes by just pulling your shoulders back you will inadvertently stick your chin out.
